چکیده

We compared the conventional atomizing disc aeroponic technology with the latest ultrasonic nebulizer technology for the production of Glomus intraradices inocula. The piezo ceramic element technology used in the ultrasonic nebulizer employed high frequency sound that blasted the nutrient solution and nibulized it into micro-droplets size of 1μm in diameter. Growth of the pre-colonized AMF-roots of Sudan grass was successfully achieved in both the chambers used in this study but root growth and mycorrhization was statistically faster and higher in the ultrasonic nebulizer aeroponic system than in the atomizing disc aeroponic system. The shearing of the AMF infected roots from both the systems did not result in the loss of inoculum viability as evident from the MPN data. However, MPN assay showed that sheared roots produced using the ultra-sonic nebulizer system had a significantly higher number of infective propagules than those produced by the atomizing disc system. Our findings indicate that the latest ultra-sonic nebulizer aeroponic technology is superior, and can be an alternative to conventional atomizing disc or spray nozzle systems for a high quality concentration of AMF isolates which can be used in small doses to produce large response, a pre-requisite for commercialization of AMF technology.

Production of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus inoculum in aeroponic culture.

Bahia grass (Paspalum notatum) and industrial sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) colonized by Glomus deserticola, G. etunicatum, and G. intraradices were grown in aeroponic cultures. After 12 to 14 weeks, all roots were colonized by the inoculated vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Abundant vesicles and arbuscules formed in the roots, and profuse sporulation was detected intra-and extraradical...

Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on plant growth and essential oil content and composition of Ocimum basilicum L. Mayam Zolfaghari1*, Vahideh Nazeri1, Fatemeh Sefidkon2 and Farhad Rejali3

The potential of three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) - Glomus mosseae, G. fasciculatum and G. intraradices- to enhance the production of essential oil and plant growth parameter was investigated in sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum). The AMF inoculation significantly increased plant height, fresh and dry matter yield, oil content and oil yield as compared to non-inoculated basil plants. Essent...

In vitro culture of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi: advances and future prospects

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are ecologically important for most vascular plants for their growth and survival. AM fungi are obligate symbionts. In recent years, there have been many attempts to cultivate in vitro. Some relevant results indicate efforts are not far from successful growth of AM fungi independent of a plant host. This paper describes the methods to cultivate root organs, and...

Influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in sugarcane productivity under semiarid tropical agro ecosystem in India

Impact of Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in sugarcane productivity was assessed through a field experiment from plant and ratoon sugarcane in Tamil Nadu, India. Control, 12.5 and 18.75 kg ha-1 of AMF along with 75% and 100% of phosphorous application were triedas treatments. 18.75 kg ha-1 AMF applied plots showed significant difference in germination percentage, tiller number, internode...

Symbiosis relationship between some arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Salsola laricina and its effect on improving plant growth parameters

The aim of this study was to examine the symbiosis relationshipbetween some arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Salsola laricina (Chenopodiaceae), a non-mycotrophic plant speciesand its effect on improving plant growth parameters. Initially, the development of AMF density was monitored through two parameters including evaluation of mycorrhizal colonization of plant roots and density measurem...
